Dining table decorated for a Christmas dinner and place setting with fabric napkin

Cosy Christmas table ideas

Christmas is a time for inviting family and friends for lunch, dinner or just a coffee (or mulled wine) get-together. This Christmas, make your guests feel extra welcome and impress them with a superb table setting inviting for hygge.

It takes minimal effort to create a beautiful table setting, but it has a remarkable impact. These 6 tips will help you design a stunning and inviting tablescape.

1. Tablecloth, Christmas table runner or placemats?

A white tablecloth is a classic, timeless choice, that complements any decor. It's also a neutral base on which you can experiment with accessories such as placemats, table runners, napkins and other décor of different colours.

If you prefer to showcase your beautiful dining table, skip the tablecloth altogether and opt for a Christmas table runner. It is a decorative solution that adds a touch of elegance, and it can be used in various ways: Several table runners across your table or just one along the length of the table – or mix them so they cross each other. Cover the middle with other décor like a centrepiece or a collection of candlesticks.

2. Decide on a colour palette

You don’t have to restrict yourself to a red and green colour scheme, even though these are classic and traditional Christmas colours. Choose shades that you adore and use accessories to add a festive Christmas touch. By limiting your colour palette to variations of the same colour, it’s much easier to obtain a cohesive and visually appealing table setting.

3. Incorporate nature in your décor

When you add a touch of nature to your holiday table with fresh pine or dried flowers, you and your guests can enjoy their subtle aroma and the elegant look.

Place a small sprig on each plate, arrange them in a vase or place real pinecones in little clusters on the dining table. It's a free and easy way to add a seasonal scent and a touch of greenery.

4. Create a festive centrepiece

A centrepiece is a grouping of flowers or candles in varying heights that serve as a focal point on the dining table. The right centrepiece can
enhance the overall look of your Christmas event and help create the right ambiance.

3 tips to centrepieces:

  • Don’t make it too tall: It can obstruct your guests' view.
  • Consider the table shape: A long table can accommodate multiple centrepieces while round tables are best suited for just one in the middle.
  • Don't be afraid to break the rules. If you love a tall centrepiece, feel free to place it at the end of the table.

5. Use lighting to create a warm atmosphere

Smaller sources of light create a more intimate atmosphere than a ceiling lamp but do make sure that your guests can see what is on their plates and don’t forget to light up buffet table or the bar.

Combine light and décor in one item - for example the star shaped RUTILKVARTS candle holder.

6. Decide between cloth napkins and paper napkins

Cloth napkins add a touch of elegance and luxury to your Christmas table, making the occasion feel truly special. They can both enhance the dining experience and evoke fond memories of past celebrations as you fold them for future gatherings.

On the other hand, paper napkins are practical if you plan to serve a dish that leaves tough stains. They also come in a rich variety of colours and designs.

Whether you choose fabric or paper napkins you enhance their appearance by folding them to the shape of e.g. a Christmas tree or tying them together with a ribbon.

By following these tips, you can create a memorable and inviting Christmas table setting.

Merry Christmas!
