Enhance the properties of your mattress
The top mattress should work with the comfort zones in the underlying mattress. If, for example, you have a five-zone spring core in your mattress, you'll have a firm zone at your hips and a soft zone at your shoulders. If you add a zoned top mattress to it, the zones should be in the same location in both mattresses.
Neutralise the properties of your mattress
In some cases, you might choose to buy a top mattress that neutralises, rather than complements, the properties of your existing mattress.
